With your Internet name established using PlanetDNS Client, your computer
can support a variety of services, including a mail server.
To run your own mail server
Download Mail
Server.
Download a mail server that will meet your needs.
Install and setup
your Mail Server.
Install and configure the mail server you have downloaded. Follow the
instructions, using the product's associated Help files as needed.
Configure your
Router and Firewall
You will need to configure your router and/or firewall before others
on the Internet will be able to send mail to your Internet name (domain
name) and have your mail server receive them.
Routers
You will need to set up the Port Forwarding
(for LINKSYS models) or Virtual Servers
(for D-LINK models) to allow the mail server to be accessed by other mail
servers on the Internet. by
specifiying that TCP PORT 25 needs to be opened and forwarded to the computer
that is running the mail server software and PlanetDNS Client. For more
information on how-to setup port forwarding, please refer to the instruction
manual that came with your router.
Firewalls
All firewalls need to be configured to allow other mail servers on
the Internet to connect to your mail server. To do this, you need to allow
the default mail port TCP PORT 25 to be accessed on inbound connections
to the computer that is running the mail server and the PlanetDNS Client
software.
Test your Mail
Server
You can test your mail server by sending mail to your Internet Name
in the format <user>@yourname.planetdns.net
or <user>@yourdomain.com
if you have the PlanetDNS Pro/Enterprise Service.
