With your Internet name established using PlanetDNS Client, your computer can support a variety of services, including a web server for your own website.

To run your own web server

  1. Download Web Server
Download a web server that will meet your needs.

  2. Install and setup your web server.
Install and configure the web server you have downloaded. Follow the instructions, using the product's associated Help files as needed.

  3. Configure your router and/or firewall (if applicable)
You will need to configure your router and/or firewall before others on the Internet will be able to connect to your web server and view your website.

    Routers
All routers need to be configured to allow others on the Internet to connect to your website. You will need to activate the
Port Forwarding (for LINKSYS routers), or Virtual Servers (for D-LINK routers) feature. The feature opens the router's TCP PORT 80 to outside users accessing your Internet name and forwards them to the computer that is running the web server and PlanetDNS Client to view your website. For more information on how to set up port forwarding, please refer to your router's instructions manual.

    Firewalls
All firewalls need to be configured to allow others on the Internet to connect to your web server and view your website from the Internet. The changes will allow the default web port TCP PORT 80 to be opened so Internet users accessing your Internet name can reach the computer that is running the web server and PlanetDNS Client.

  4. Test your Web Server
Launch your web browser and type in your Internet name as your web address. For example, if your Internet name is jsmith.planetdns.net, you would type in http://jsmith.planetdns.net in your web browser. Similarly, if you had a domain name of yourdomain.com, you would type in www.yourdomain.com. If everything is set up correctly, your website should be displayed.
