If you have a DSL, cable, wireless, satellite, LAN, or dial-up connection to the Internet, your Internet service provider will assign your computer an Internet Protocol (IP) address each time you connect to the Internet. An IP address is a long series of numbers that identifies your computer on the Internet. A basic Internet connection through an Internet service provider works fine if all you want to do is surf the Internet, download files and read your e-mail from your computer.
