With PlanetRemote, you can take control of the PlanetRemote-enabled computer, using either a web browser or PlanetRemote Viewer. Each application has distinct advantages and disadvantages.

 

Using a Web Browser

You can use a standard JAVA-enabled web browser on the local computer, such as Internet Explorer, Opera, Netscape, Mozilla, etc., to take control of the PlanetRemote-enabled computer from anywhere in the world where an Internet connection is available.
 

Advantages of using a Web Browser
 

  • No software installation is required on the local computer used to take control of the PlanetRemote-enabled computer.

  • Use the web browser of your choice, provided it has JAVA support enabled.

  • Platform independent, so you can take control of the PlanetRemote-enabled computer using a variety of different platforms, including Macintosh and Unix (Linux) operating systems.

 

Disadvantages of using a Web Browser
 

  • Slower update and response times between the local and PlanetRemote-enabled computer.
     

Using PlanetRemote Viewer

PlanetRemote Viewer is a special application that you can readily download from the PlanetDNS website. The software runs on the local computer that you are going to use to take control of the PlanetRemote-enabled computer. It is a small program that is downloaded to the local computer, but is not installed. Once downloaded, click on the PlanetRemote Viewer icon on the local computer's desktop to open the viewer and specify the name of the PlanetRemote-enabled computer you want to remote control.
 

Advantages of using PlanetRemote Viewer
 

  • Faster update and response times when controlling the PlanetRemote-enabled computer.

  • Automatically shows available computers on your local area network that have PlanetRemote installed.

  • Easily create a profile and set preferences, such as connection speed and color resolution, for each PlanetRemote-enabled computer.

  • Features full-screen mode and scale-to-fit option for viewing the remote computer's desktop.

 

Disadvantages of using PlanetRemote Viewer
 

  • Platform dependent, runs only on Microsoft Windows operating system.

  • Needs to be downloaded onto the local computer before you can control the PlanetRemote-enabled computer.
