The Hosts tab allows you to restrict one or more computers or entire networks from establishing remote control connections to your computer.

Access Policy

The access policy defines whether a select number or all computers are permitted to establish remote connections to this computer.

  • Allow all computers to authenticate and control this computer (recommended)
Select this option to gain remote access to  your computer from anywhere on the Internet (provided you know the password). With this option enabled, you should also enable the Automatically restrict computers with excessive password failures option. This added security option permanently refuses remote access to any user who has failed to enter the correct password after seven consecutive attempts.

  • Do not allow any computer to authenticate and control this computer
Select this option if you know specifically which computers or networks will be permitted to make remote connections to your computer. If you regularly connect to your home computer from work only (or vice-versa), you can include the IP address (or hostname) of your computer (or router), or the IP address block of your Internet service provider on the Policy Exceptions list.

  • Automatically restrict computers with excessive password failures
Enable this option to permanently restrict remote access to your computer by any user who fails to enter the correct password after seven consecutive attempts. After seven consecutive password failures, the remote computer's hostname and IP address will be automatically added to the Policy Exceptions list and refused subsequent connection.

Policy Exceptions

You can create exceptions to the Access Policy you have selected by specifying the IP address of the computer or networks. To specify a network, list zero as the last digit of the IP address. For example, 192.168.1.0 represents network 192.168.1.0/24 and 192.168.0.0 represents network 192.168.0.0/16.

To add an exception, click the Add button and enter the IP address of the local computer or network. Click the Modify button to modify an existing entry that you have highlighted from the list. To delete an entry, highlight it and click the Delete button. You will be asked to confirm your decision to delete the selected host or network. To clear all Policy Exceptions, click the Clear button. You will be asked to confirm your decision to delete all computer IP addresses or networks listed.
