Troubleshooting
PlanetDNS Client™ is an application that allows you to expand the capabilities of your computer to include an Internet server function. Using this software, you'll be able to create an Internet name (domain name) for your computer that remains constantly linked to your current IP address. You can choose your own domain name, which you and others on the Internet can use to connect to any type of server running on your computer, including a web server, FTP server, mail server, photo server and game server.
What services do you offer for
the PlanetDNS Client? We offer the PlanetDNS Standard, PlanetDNS Pro, and PlanetDNS Enterprise service levels.
See PlanetDNS Services for more details..
See How to reactivate an existing account for more details.
Some tabs are missing in the software,
how can I get them to show up? The software can operate in two user modes: Novice and Expert Mode. By default, the software will be set to Novice Mode hiding all advanced tabs and options in the software. When Expert Mode is enabled, all tabs will be shown.
See How to set the software to Expert mode for more details.
How do I test my Internet Name
to make sure it is working? You can test your Internet name (domain name) to ensure that you have set up the software correctly, by pressing the Test feature in the Connection tab of PlanetDNS Client. The test confirms that your PlanetDNS Client is operating properly by reporting your Internet name's current IP address.
See How to test your Internet name for more details.
What is an Internet/Domain Name? If you have a DSL, cable, wireless, satellite, LAN, or dial-up connection to the Internet, your Internet Service Provider (ISP) will assign your computer an IP (Internet Protocol) address each time you connect to the Internet. An IP address is a long series of numbers that identifies your computer on the Internet. Through your IP address, other computer users can locate you on the Internet and exchange data (e.g. sending or receiving e-mail and surfing the Internet).
A basic Internet connection through an ISP works fine if all you want to do is surf the Internet, download files and read your e-mail from your computer. However, if you would like others to be able to connect to your computer, they would have to know what your computer's current IP address is. Not only is your numerical address difficult to remember, but your ISP will typically change it each time you connect to the Internet. It would be like having a new phone number every time you picked up the receiver. So, your challenge is to create a convenient and reliable way for others to reach you on the Internet.
PlanetDNS Client software offers the ideal solution, by constantly linking your computer's IP address to an Internet name that you choose. Now, others can find you by using your easy-to-remember name, instead of a numeric address. Best of all, your domain name will always stay the same, since PlanetDNS Client automatically tracks your computer's location on the Internet – no matter how frequently your IP address changes.
What can I do with my Internet
Name? Once you have created an Internet name with the PlanetDNS Client software for your computer, you can run your own web server, ftp server, mail server, game server or any other type of Internet server right from your own computer.
How long will it take for my Internet
name to link to my new IP address after it changes? Your Internet name (domain name) will be updated within 2 minutes to the PlanetDNS name servers after it changes. In addition, each time you connect to the Internet or start the software, your IP address will immediately be updated to link to your computer's current IP address.
Will my Internet name link to my router's
WAN IP when it changes? Yes, the PlanetDNS Client software will always link your Wide Area Network (WAN) IP address with your chosen Internet name (domain name) and not the private LAN IP address of your computer.
Can I run my own webserver using the
PlanetDNS Client software? Yes, now that others on the Internet can locate your computer using your Internet name (domain name) you can easily run your own website by installing your own web server. Your Internet name is compatible with all web servers on the Internet.
Can I still run my own website
if my ISP is blocking port 80? Yes, you can enable web port redirection (HTTP Relay) to run your own
website, even if your ISP is blocking Port 80 to your computer. The feature
allows you to provide outside access to your web server through an alternate
port (other than the default Port 80 for websites) to allow your visitors
access to your website See How to enable web port redirection for more details.
Can I redirect visitors to a different
website when I am offline? Yes, just click the Advanced tab and select the Point my Internet Name to this URL option. You can specify any valid URL (including, ftp, http, https, gopher, etc.)
With your Internet name established using PlanetDNS Client, your computer can support a variety of services, including a mail server.
See How to run your own mail server for more details.
Can I still run my own mail
server if my ISP is blocking port 25? You can enable mail port redirection to run your own mail server, even if your ISP is blocking Port 25 to your computer. The feature will allow you to run a mail server on a port other than the default Port 25 used for mail.
See How to enable mail port redirection for more details.
Any mail sent to your Internet name (domain name) can automatically
be forwarded to any e-mail address of your choice without having to setup
your own mail server. See How to enable e-mail forwarding for details.
Can I receive e-mail for my Internet
name (domain name) without running my own mail server? Yes, you can enable e-mail forwarding if you do not want to run your own mail server but still want to receive e-mail for your Internet name (domain name). For example, the feature sends all mail for <anyuser>@jsmith.planetdns.net to an e-mail address that you specify. The e-mail address could be your e-mail address at your ISP, hotmail account, etc.
See How to enable e-mail forwarding for details.
Can I enable virus scanning
in the software? Yes, you can enable PlanetDNS Client to automatically virus scan your
Internet name (domain name) e-mail. Please note that this does NOT
guarantee that all viruses will be successfully intercepted. You should
continue to perform regular backups of important files and documents on
your computer, as appropriate.
See How to enable virus scanning for more details.
Can I enable automatic spam
filtering in the software? Yes, you can enable PlanetDNS Client to automatically check your Internet name (domain name) e-mail for spam.
See How to enable spam filtering for more details.
What is mail store and forward? Mail is temporarily stored on a service provider's mail server until you connect to the Internet to pickup your mail. Without mail-store-and-forward, anyone sending mail to any user at your domain while you are offline, will eventually get a "message could not be delivered" message.
Do you store my mail in case my
mail server goes offline or is un-available? Yes, the PlanetDNS service includes integrated mail store-and-forward feature, ensuring that no mail is lost in the event that your mail server is down or unable to accept e-mail. PlanetDNS' mail store-and-forward servers automatically send any accumulated e-mail to your server as soon as it is back online.
The mail store-and-forward feature is provided within the limits of a maximum daily volume quota, which is determined by the service level of your subscription. Quotas are reset each day at 12 a.m. ET. You will be notified by e-mail, and your incoming messages will be returned to the sender, if you exceed your allotted daily quota. You can check your daily quota allocation and current usage by clicking the Mail Relay tab in PlanetDNS Client properties.
How can I view my mail relay queues
for my Internet name (domain name)? The Mail Relay tab allows you to view the status of the mail relay queues for your Internet name (domain name). Whether you are running your own mail server, or have all e-mail for your Internet name (domain name) forwarded to an address managed by your Internet service provider, you can use this plug-in to see what’s waiting to be delivered to you.
Can I use my own domain name with PlanetDNS

the Pro service? Yes, you can add as many domains as you want to the Pro service for an additional fee per domain/year. Each domain you add to the Pro service will automatically be added to your existing account and will point to.
